WEEKLY REVIEW
05.31.2010

Located in our
Firearm Safes and Storage category is the featured
vendor SecureLogic which features a number of secure
storage solutions.
The photo illustrated above is the popular
model Wall Vault, which is quickly becoming an
industry leader in safes for a number of reasons. We
were very fortunate to do a hands on test of this safe and
hope to walk you through the process from purchase to
install. The version of the safe tested was $349.00 as
of today, and the unit shipped immediately (very simple
online purchase process).
Perhaps the most impressive feature of this
safe is its certification from the United States Department
of Justice as a firearm safety device. That speaks
directly to the build quality of the safe, and ensures it
has met a stringent standard of protecting assets from
unwanted access.
The Wall Vault is designed to fit between standard
studs and can be installed with ease if you have basic
knowledge, a hole saw ($4.00 at hardware store), and a
drill. We installed our safe in about 30 minutes, and
even if you have zero experience a
carpenter should be able to do the job for less than a
hundred dollars.
Once the safe was installed and secured, we
were overwhelmed with a euphoric child like feeling as we
operated the gravity based door. When the pass code is
entered, or the biometric fingerprint is recognized the door
drops straight down when the lock is released. The
safe also has an override lock in the event the pass code
does not operate or the batteries are dead. We did not
experience any difficulty in accessing the safe and were
able to get into the safe within seconds every time.
Below are the two access options offered for the safe.

The safe can be
covered with a picture if you so elect (we had one from IKEA
that would have worked just fine), but we chose to leave the
stainless steel look. We tried to emulate what would
be put in a wall vault in a typical household setting, and
were able to easily fit a chunk of cash, two hand guns, a
watch, passports, a usb drive (data and family photos), and
a folder of paperwork.
Overall we are thrilled with the safe, and
even found a number of other products offered by Secure
Logic that integrate very well into the tactical and
security minded individuals. For more information

Located in the
Firearm Accessory category is the company MAKO
which started in 2003, and specializes in firearm and
tactical accessories. The photo above is a stock,
called the GL-Shock, that they manufacture. As of
today it lists for $108.80. With an abundance of
aftermarket accessories for the AR15 companies must strive
to offer a product which offers something unique.
MAKO did just that with their stock and the features are
certainly unique.

The photo
listed above is the GL-ShockCP (with optional cheek
piece). This option is an additional $10.00 and can be
lowered to sit flush on the stock if not being used.
After taking feedback from soldiers MAKO also formed a
special butpad on the rear of the stock to avoid poor
placement against nylon or the rifle from slipping when
pressed against the shoulder of the individual. The
butpad conceals a storage space designed for batteries (for
the optics). The storage space is waterproof, and
allows the individual to have the reassurance their optics
will not become inept if it is left powered on or if the
optic dies in the field. The stock also has a sling
swivel connector which is ambidextrous and is accepts almost
any standard ring on the market.

We tested one of these stocks and had
nothing but positive feedback from anyone who touched it.
As soon as we took the stock out of the box you can
instantly tell it is very well made, and capable of handling
the abuse law enforcement and military personnel are going
to dish out. The rubber butpad did its job very well
and helped grip a uniform when firing rapidly. If all
of the listed features aren't enough, there is also recoil
reduction spring that helps the shooter stay on target much
easier.
Even users that tend to favor a standard
length stock (for muscle memory purposes and ease of knowing
its always in the same place) will love this adjustable
stock simply because it helps the shooter in so many
aspects.

In
our Light
category of products is one of our featured vendors COAST,
which continues to produce lighting for the law enforcement
community. COAST really raised the bar with their
X21 light which puts out a staggering 1070 lumens (which
is off the chart bright). Being an LED light the
flashlight draws very little in the usage of electricity,
and creates a balance that most officers strive to achieve
when using lights in the field.
We would not recommend this light as a
regular patrol flashlight since it is 16 inches in length,
but found numerous uses for the X21. It seems
to shatter the competition when you start to use the light
to search for something, or anything for that matter.
We have been testing the light for the past month and have
used it in a city setting as well as the deeply wooded
terrain. When the light is activated in a wooded
setting across a field at about 2 in the morning, it felt as
if we were sitting at Giants stadium and were playing under
the lights. Another really nice feature we found is
that the light does slip into a patrol uniform pocket
easily, so if you do need the use of your hands once you
locate the suspect or need to render first aide there is no
need to set the light down on the ground.
The light is rugged, and I can attest to
that first hand because I accidentally dropped the light on
a concrete garage floor. The drop did not phase the
light in the least and we have abused the light with heavy
use for a month since. The light is also
adjustable in the same fashion as many other COAST
lights. There is a one inch crown on the light which
moves away from the light changing the scope of the beam,
and when the light is concentrated it is bright enough to
get the attention of the search helicopter or passing plane.

The COAST company is dedicated to
providing solutions that help public servants in the line of
their duties, and are even giving away a new X21 on
their website if you sign up for their newsletter.
