WEEKLY REVIEW 04.26.2010

While browsing our Police Light category, you will find a company Petzl which specializes in head lamps.  We have been testing the TACTIKKA® PLUS 4 LED headlamp with 3 lighting levels and for the past few months.  I can unequivocally say after extensive testing that I will always own a headlamp in some capacity.  The light has so much more to offer than just its headlamp features, and I tend to use it as a flashlight just as much as I do as a headlamp.

The light is illuminated by 4 LED bulbs and is powered by 3 AAA batteries.  The switch to turn the light on is directly on top of the unit in a sealed rubber housing.  With one push of the button the light is turned on.  If you push the button again within a short period of time the light cycles between modes (including a strobe mode where the light flashes).  If more than a few seconds passes once the light is activated it just turns on and off like a normal light, so you do not have to worry about cycling through all of the modes if you would just like to turn the light on and off.

The light also offers a tactical feature by flipping the red hinged lens up to cover the LED lights.  If the headband is on, the housing unit of the light is also adjustable and clicks downward to assist with the appropriate activity.

We have used this light in so many applications it would take a week to accurately describe the utility of the light.  Just a few examples of our test would include changing a tire, jumpstarting a car, clearing a building, following a K9 unit, a hike after dark, and even looking for car keys while trying not to wake a 2 year old.

It is also unfair to say this light is specialized for law enforcement or the military because it is specialized for life in general.  The best part of the light is its compact size (only about 2 inches in size), since you can stow the light anywhere.

I can certainly understand there are times when it may look awkward to have a light strapped to your head, so it is in those situations I chose to just scrunch the strap up and hold it, or use the clip.  The light is offered in black and camo configurations, and costs 50 dollars.

Located in our Police Boot category is a boot featured by the American based company Altama.  With summer approaching we are reviewing the Black 6" Ortho-TacX® Boot.  The boot feels much more like a track shoe, and is very light compared to other boots.

There was a slight break-in period with the boot, but after about 6 hours the boots began to feel more like a glove and they were extremely comfortable by the second shift.  The Ortho-TacX has nylon speed laces, and offers the loops on the top two rungs of the boot which makes the boot a breeze to lace up.

This particular pair of Altama's also features a Vibram sole which has grown to become a huge bonus here at PoliceListing.  For those officers who really work up a sweat during the summer the boot also has a removable innersole.  The patent pending double density EVA with multi-port ventilation helps to keep the officers dry and ventilated in warmer climates.

We have been extremely satisfied with any of the Altama footwear tested to date, and also with Altama as a company.  They often make an extra effort to ensure law enforcement and military are satisfied with their products, and thrive to seek information so they can evolve boots to meet the changing needs of the law enforcement society.  For more information on the Altama Ortho-Tacx please visit http://www.altama.com/products/42-Black-6-Ortho-TacX-Boot

Located in our Firearm Accessory page of Products is a company which features this skeleton stock.  The AR15 Skleton Stock - ARFX from Aces Ltd. is a fixed stock replacement designed to fit the standard AR15.  Out of the box it was pretty self explanatory how to replace the stock, and it only took me about 15 minutes.

On the back of the standard stock you will find two screws.  Just undue those rear screws and pull the factory stock off (the only disclaimer I would give is some have a very small spring closest to the handle, so try not to lose it).  Once the stock is off you will see an existing tube, and the replacement ACE stock slides over the existing tube.  The stock comes complete with its own screws, so just retighten the screws and that is pretty much it.

Some officers prefer an adjustable stock, while others know they are comfortable with a fixed position and choose to adjust their tactics to meet the fixed stock configuration.  Some states restrict adjustable stocks, so keeping a standard stock allows people to keep the weapon without applying for a special permit (Check with your state - most have a firearm units that can help ensure you are keeping your rifle within state regulations)

Our stock is currently on a STAG arms rifle, and is certainly among the top when picking a fixed stock.  For more information visit the Ace Website at http://www.riflestocks.com
