WEEKLY REVIEW 04.19.2010

Police work cannot be all work and no play, so we are developing a police lifestyle tab on our site in the product section full of adventure to help our crew find events that avoid the typical weekend to home depot and bed, bath and beyond.  After all, you have learned how to drive fast, wrestle, and shoot...we might as well put your skills to the test.  And for those who have not been to an academy or the military, but want to give it a go......here is a good starting point.

From the Tough Mudder Team

The Tough Mudder is a nationwide event that takes a wicked twist on the conventional marathon run. The Tough Mudder team states the series is being launched because there is not a race in America that tests toughness, fitness, strength, stamina and mental grit all in one place and all in one day. Sure, there are a few races that will test these things – for thousands of dollars and a week of your life. But in one day in one location? We don’t think so. Other mud runs like the Muddy Buddy series? Forget it – unless you want to run alongside your 60-year-old grandmother. Tough Mudder is a truly exceptional event for truly exceptional people. Fair weather runners should stay at home.

FACT – Marathon running is simply boring. And the only thing more boring than doing a marathon is watching a marathon. Road-running may give you a healthy set of lungs, but will leave you with as much upper body strength as Keira Knightley. At Tough Mudder, we want to test your all-around mettle, not just your ability to run in a straight line, on your own, for hours on end, getting bored out of your mind.

Tough Mudder is also about experiencing a true sense of camaraderie that, sadly, is rarely seen outside of the military these days. To get over some of our obstacles you will need the help of others – they are simply too much for one man to tackle alone. Tough Mudders, unlike some other types of endurance racers, are team players; they help out other Tough Mudders. We want everyone to compete, but being a Tough Mudder is also about making sure no man is left behind, not worrying about your race time.

THE TOUGH MUDDER PLEDGE

We think it is important that all Tough Mudders uphold the ideals and philosophy behind Tough Mudder and share a common attitude to teamwork and camaraderie. For this reason, we make everyone sign the Tough Mudder pledge and have everyone recite it again together when they are on the start line. This is something very important to us, so if you want be a Mudder you have to accept the principals of the Mudder.

The Pledge:

As a Tough Mudder I pledge that…

* I understand that Tough Mudder is not a race but a challenge.

* I put teamwork and camaraderie before my course time.

* I do not whine – kids whine.

* I help my fellow Mudders complete the course.

* I overcome all fears.

Not only is it a great event, the Tough Mudder team has incorporated a philanthropic state of mind into their bad ass events by allowing people to donate portions of their ticket to the Wounded Warrior ProjectFor more information and to sign up (they sold out of the last two events in record time) please visit www.toughmudder.com!

We are working out the details to be on site for the event, so look for our T-shirts, and remember sometimes its ok to shoot a mosquito with a shotgun!!

U.S. Armor is among the first of the ballistic providers to evolve their gear to meet the needs of the working law enforcement troops.  This vest depicts evolution at its very best.  Currently this vest is being used by administrators, detectives, gang teams, and tactical teams.

Plain clothed officers who have to respond in a hurry can quickly grab this vest from their trunk and be ready to respond to even the most dangerous situations while being readily visible as a police officer.  Conventional ballistic vests do not have pouches for gear, have to be put on over your head, with tabs to help stay into a shirt.  Being short on time the conventional vest can actually become a hazard if its not tucked in.   Alternatively this vest zips in the front with a flap and is sized to fit.

We cannot wait for the day when this type of vest is used on a daily basis by the patrol unit as well.  Once society gets over the stigma of a tactical look, there are a number of benefits to help the officer.

In the military we would wear Load Bearing Equipment (LBE) which is a fancy term for something like this vest.  It was helpful because it dissipates the 25lbs of gear or so to your shoulders causing less fatigue, and if you have the ability to go inside for a lunch break you can unzip from the gear and get some relief.

I have reached out to the people at U.S. Armor and have been trying to give some input for future vests.  The ideal vest in my world would be this model in a dark blue or black without the collar, have some keeper extensions from the bottom to attach to a gun belt and keep just the gun attached to the belt as it hangs from the vest of gear.

I'm sure the folks at U.S. Armor will continue to support the law enforcement community and military, and I look forward to new products to come.  For more information please visit their site at http://www.usarmor.com

Many people in the law enforcement community wrestle with tactical operations, and what is the best gear for our situations.  These tactics change regularly, and most departments have come to realize there is not a "single solution" for everyone.  Many agencies are adapting their practices to allow officers the discretion of using the tools that best fit their size, frame, or even comfort level.

Sling options are one of those categories that may require different solutions, and in any locker room you can hear officers debate a perspective on why single point sling is more tactical for them, while others argue dual point slings are more functional.

Viking Tactical has an innovative dual point sling, and can be demonstrated in this video:

We hope to get a sling in hand to get out on the range to really give it a work out, and in the mean time visit the Viking website for more information:
