CHEVY POLICE
PATROL VEHICLE
Chevy
refuses to go quietly into the night with the release of the
all-new Chevy Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle (PPV). In
a time when Ford has decided to retire the powerhouse rear
wheel drive eight cylinder beast because of technology,
Chevy seems to think its an opportunity to bring their own
eight cylinder to over 12,500 law enforcement agencies
across the country.
While
we haven't driven the PPV yet, we are a bit surprised to see
a vehicle of this nature just making an entry into the
market while everyone else seems to be getting away from it
after a decade.
Another disappointment was to
find out Chevy is only offering the rear wheel drive model.
Even if you represent a police department where there is
little or no snow officers are constantly exposed to tactical
situations in which all-wheel drive is useful
(dirt roads, evasive maneuvers, or heavy rain).
The only guess we could make
is that Chevy is betting that Ford will not have enough reliability
in their all-wheel drive system and customers will revert
back to the setup that has proven itself reliable. The
Chevy does offer a more spacious cabin, and a bigger motor
which is
certain to help officers get to their destination in a
hurry.
We called Chevy to ask a few
questions and to our surprise the representative actually
told us most cops don't have the skill set to drive in
tactical situations regardless of the cars configuration.
Lets hope we just caught him on a bad day, and we actually
look forward to taking the new Caprice for a drive when it
hits the streets.
